PRACTICAL SCULPTURE: A VISION OF MARBLE, BY JOAQUÍN MOLL
Joaquín Moll's practical sculpture is present in the furniture collection of the most exclusive houses in Madrid.
To understand Joaquín Moll's vision of marble and practical sculpture, we must understand his career. His entire profession is closely linked to the understanding of the craft that Joaquín explains below:
My career began in the late 80's in Madrid. With my partner José Luis García Soto we launched a project with which we set out to achieve a purpose: to manufacture marble products characterized by an unparalleled quality and a groundbreaking design, which managed to make their way into the decoration sector of the Spanish capital through distribution agreements with the most exclusive local vendors.
Going back to our beginnings, the ambitious project was a success. Moll quickly became a highly appreciated name in the world of interior design. It was a time when taste and class flourished, as well as the appreciation of noble materials combined with the most exclusive fabrics.
Our furniture became part of many people's lives. They conveyed a relaxed atmosphere, gave the environment a professional look and inspired a feeling of family. In addition, marble always denotes elegance, sophistication. It is a very special material. I see my creations as elements that basically grow around it, to fill it with successes, stories, experiences.
In general, my final pieces are composed of a marble and metal pedestal, supported by a glass top which, in my opinion, is a fundamental part of the design, providing the final touch and a most glamorous detail. On other occasions, I mix materials by combining their different appearances in their raw state, as is the case with metals.
I deeply admire the personality that materials have and I try to keep their language intact. In this way, once you get close to contemplate the piece of decoration, the materials communicate by themselves.
My most important references are the Spanish artists of the twentieth century, and in particular those sculptors such as Eduardo Chillida and Jorge de Oteiza. They admired the same materials that I love, such as stone and metals, as well as their oxidation processes and voids.
Of course, designing with a material requires knowing it. Listening to it, thinking about it and modeling it in my mind. All my life I have lived in the workspace, where I have studied, discovered and learned about new materials, tones, textures and treatment techniques. Innovation and continuous learning have been part of my professional career.
In fact, after 40 years in this profession, I am still learning and developing my skills every day.
The marble and stones that I use the most are noble materials, not well known for their exclusivity, but for their appearance and their pleasant and simple aesthetics that harmonize easily with the interiors.
I work with a wide range of marbles, especially those with surprising and unique veins. It is essential that I personally choose the slabs and blocks I am going to work with. The same material from the same quarry can have very significant variations.
Proportion, balance, the search for the beauty of forms. Outlining, drawing, cutting, lightening the stone. These are the driving forces behind my designs. I hope you will find them in my new Synthesis Collection.
